The Hyannis Armory is located at 225 South Street, Hyannis, Massachusetts. The armory was built in 1958. The armory hosted Battery D of the 685th AAA Machine Gun Battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. President-elect John F. Kennedy gave his victory speech at the Hyannis Armory on Nov. 9, 1960. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places.[2]
The site is now being talked about as a place to put a new performing arts center,[3] which would be the second for the town, the first being at Barnstable High School. This facility has no running water inside of its confines and no gas heating. The Sturgis Charter School's basketball team practices within the facility and the lack of heat has sometimes led to temperatures inside being colder than those outside. The plan to tear down the facility and replace it was shelved when the economy collapsed in 2008.
